Southern-Style Hamburger Steak

Here’s a classic Southern-Style Hamburger Steak recipe—comfort food with rich onion gravy 🧅🍽️

Ingredients

Hamburger Steaks

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 is best)
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ cup crushed saltine crackers or breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • Salt & black pepper to taste

Onion Gravy

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Make the patties
    In a bowl, mix ground beef, milk, crackers, egg, Worcestershire, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
    Form into 4–6 oval patties.
  2. Brown the steaks
    Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned.
    Remove and set aside (they’ll finish cooking in the gravy).
  3. Cook onions
    In the same skillet, add butter and onions. Cook until soft and golden, about 8–10 minutes.
  4. Make the gravy
    Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1 minute.
    Slowly add beef broth and Worcestershire, stirring until smooth.
  5. Simmer
    Return hamburger steaks to the skillet.
    Cover and simmer 15–20 minutes, until gravy thickens and patties are cooked through.

How to Serve (Southern Style)

  • Mashed potatoes 🥔
  • White rice
  • Green beans or collard greens
  • Biscuits or cornbread
