🥘 Savory Cabbage Beef Bake

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small head green cabbage, chopped
  • 1 (14–15 oz) can diced tomatoes
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp Italian seasoning (or thyme)
  • Salt & black pepper, to taste
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese

Optional additions

  • ½ cup cooked rice or egg noodles
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Red pepper flakes for heat

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven
    • 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 baking dish.
  2. Cook beef
    • In a skillet over medium heat, brown ground beef with onion and garlic.
    • Drain excess grease.
    • Season with paprika, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
  3. Soften cabbage
    • Add cabbage to skillet and cook 5–7 minutes until slightly wilted.
  4. Assemble
    • Stir in diced tomatoes (with juice) and Worcestershire if using.
    • Transfer mixture to baking dish.
    • Sprinkle evenly with cheese.
  5. Bake
    • Cover with foil and bake 30 minutes.
    • Uncover and bake another 10–15 minutes until bubbly and golden.
  6. Rest & serve
    • Let stand 5 minutes before serving.

Tips & Variations

  • Polish-style: Add caraway seeds and use smoked sausage instead of beef.
  • Low-carb: Skip rice/pasta and use extra cabbage.
  • Creamy version: Stir in ½ cup sour cream before baking.
  • Make-ahead: Assemble up to 24 hours ahead and bake when ready.
