Put uncooked rice in a slow cooker

You can put uncooked rice in a slow cooker — but you have to do it the right way, or you’ll end up with mush… or crunchy rice. 🍚

Here’s how to do it properly:


🍚 How to Cook Uncooked Rice in a Slow Cooker

Basic White Rice Method

🛒 Ingredients

  • 1 cup long-grain white rice (rinsed)
  • 2 cups water or broth
  • ½ tsp salt (optional)
  • 1 tbsp butter or oil (optional)

🔪 Instructions

  1. Rinse rice under cold water until water runs mostly clear.
  2. Lightly grease the slow cooker.
  3. Add rice, liquid, salt, and butter.
  4. Stir once.
  5. Cover and cook on HIGH for 1½–2 hours.
  6. Check at 1½ hours — slow cookers vary.
  7. Fluff with fork and let sit 5–10 minutes before serving.

⏱ Cooking Times by Rice Type

  • White rice: 1½–2 hours (HIGH)
  • Brown rice: 2½–3 hours (HIGH), use 2½ cups liquid
  • Jasmine/Basmati: 1½ hours (check early)

⚠️ Important Tips

  • Always cook on HIGH, not LOW (it can turn gummy on LOW).
  • Don’t keep lifting the lid — it releases steam.
  • If too wet: remove lid last 10–15 minutes.
  • If too dry: add a few tablespoons hot water and cook 10 more minutes.

🥘 One-Pot Slow Cooker Chicken & Rice

You can also add:

  • 1 lb chicken
  • 2 cups broth
  • 1 cup rice
  • Seasonings

Cook chicken first 3–4 hours on LOW, then add rice and cook 1–1½ hours on HIGH.
