Ahhh, old-school spaghetti—the kind that smells like Sunday and fixes everything 🍝❤️ Simple, saucy, no fancy nonsense.
Old-School Spaghetti
Ingredients
- 1 lb spaghetti
- 1 lb ground beef (or half beef / half Italian sausage)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (24 oz) jar tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
- 1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
- 1 tsp sugar (optional, but very old-school)
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- Optional but classic: a dash of Worcestershire or bay leaf
Instructions
- Boil pasta
Cook spaghetti in well-salted water until al dente. Drain. - Brown the meat
In a big skillet or pot, brown ground beef with onion. Drain excess grease. - Add garlic & sauce
Stir in garlic (30 seconds), then tomato sauce, tomato paste, sugar, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. - Simmer low & slow
Let it bubble gently 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Longer = better. - Combine or serve
Toss spaghetti with sauce or ladle sauce over noodles (true diner style).
Serve It Right
- 🧀 Kraft shaker Parmesan (mandatory nostalgia)
- 🍞 Buttered bread or garlic toast
- 🥗 Iceberg lettuce salad with bottled Italian dressing
Old-School Tweaks
- 🧈 A small pat of butter in the sauce at the end = silky magic
- 🌶️ Red pepper flakes if you like a little heat
- 🍅 A splash of pasta water to loosen sauce
If you want the “mom made it in a big pot” version, a no-jar from-scratch, or the cafeteria-style one… say the word 😄
