Here’s a classic, rich Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pie—smooth, homemade chocolate filling in a flaky crust, just like Grandma used to make 🍫


Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pie

Ingredients

Pie Filling

  • 1 baked 9-inch pie crust
  • 1½ cups sugar
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 2½ cups milk
  • 3 large egg yolks (beaten)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Optional Topping

  • Whipped cream or meringue

Instructions

  1. Mix dry ingredients
    • In a saucepan, whisk together sugar, cocoa, flour, and salt.
  2. Add milk
    • Gradually whisk in milk until smooth.
  3. Cook the filling
    • Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened and bubbling (about 8–10 minutes).
  4. Temper egg yolks
    • Slowly whisk a small amount of hot chocolate mixture into egg yolks.
    • Pour yolks back into saucepan, stirring constantly.
  5. Finish filling
    • Cook 2 more minutes, then remove from heat.
    • Stir in butter and vanilla.
  6. Fill the pie
    • Pour hot filling into baked pie crust.
  7. Chill or top
    • Let cool, then refrigerate until set (about 2–3 hours).
    • Top with whipped cream or meringue before serving.

Old-Time Tips

  • Stir constantly to prevent scorching
  • For deeper chocolate flavor, add 1 oz melted unsweetened chocolate
  • Best served slightly chilled
