Navajo Tacos

Here’s a classic Navajo Tacos recipe—crispy fry bread topped with savory taco fixings 🌮🫓


🫓 Navajo Tacos (Fry Bread Tacos)

Ingredients

Fry Bread

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 cup warm water

  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Taco Toppings

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • 1 small onion, chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 packet taco seasoning or homemade (chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt, pepper)

  • Shredded lettuce

  • Diced tomatoes

  • Shredded cheese

  • Sour cream

  • Salsa


Instructions

1. Make Fry Bread

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.

  2. Gradually add warm water and mix until a soft dough forms.

  3. Knead lightly on a floured surface for 2–3 minutes.

  4. Divide dough into 6–8 balls and flatten into 5–6 inch discs.

  5. Heat ½ inch vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.

  6. Fry each disc 1–2 minutes per side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.

2. Cook Beef

  1. In a skillet, cook ground beef with onion and garlic until browned.

  2. Drain excess fat.

  3. Stir in taco seasoning and a splash of water. Simmer 5 minutes.

3. Assemble Navajo Tacos

  1. Place fry bread on a plate.

  2. Spoon seasoned beef over the top.

  3. Add desired toppings: lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, sour cream, salsa.

  4. Serve immediately—fry bread is best warm.

  • Fry bread can be made ahead and reheated in a skillet.

  • For a twist, add beans or corn to the beef.

  • Keep oil at medium heat—too hot burns the bread before cooking through.
