Michigan Rock Cookies

🍪 Michigan Rock Cookies

Michigan Rock Cookies are a classic, old-fashioned cookie popular in the Midwest. They’re called “rock” cookies because the dough is dropped in rough mounds that look like little rocks. Inside they’re soft and packed with oats, chocolate chips, and sometimes coconut.

🧾 Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 cups quick oats
  • 1 cup shredded coconut (optional but traditional)
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in eggs and vanilla until well combined.
  4. In another bowl, mix flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to the butter mixture.
  6. Stir in oats, coconut, chocolate chips, and nuts.
  7. Drop spoonfuls of dough onto the baking sheet (they should look rough like rocks).
  8. Bake 10–12 minutes until edges are golden.
  9. Let cool on a rack.

🍽️ What They Taste Like

  • Chewy from the oats
  • Rich and buttery
  • Crunchy bits from nuts and coconut
  • Sweet chocolate pockets

⭐ Tips

  • Don’t flatten the dough — the rocky shape is part of the cookie.
  • Slightly underbake for extra chewy cookies.
  • Add raisins or dried cherries for a more traditional Michigan version.
