Layered onions and steak with potatoes in a foil packet

Here’s a simple Foil Packet Steak, Onion & Potato Meal—all the flavors cook together in one packet for a juicy, hearty dinner. 🥩🥔🧅


Ingredients (Serves 2–4)

  • 2 steak cuts (sirloin, ribeye, or your choice), sliced or whole
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2–3 potatoes, thinly sliced or cubed
  • 2–3 tbsp olive oil or melted butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional herbs: thyme, rosemary, or parsley
  • Optional: grated cheese for topping

Instructions

1. Preheat

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) or prepare a grill for medium heat.

2. Prepare foil packets

  • Tear out 2 large sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil.
  • Drizzle each with a little olive oil or butter to prevent sticking.

3. Layer ingredients

  • Bottom layer: potatoes
  • Middle layer: sliced onions
  • Top layer: steak slices
  • Sprinkle with garlic, salt, pepper, and herbs.
  • Optional: add cheese on top before sealing.

4. Seal packets

  • Fold the foil over and seal edges tightly to trap steam and juices.

5. Cook

  • Oven: Bake for 25–35 minutes until potatoes are tender and steak is cooked to your preference.
  • Grill: Place packets on medium heat for 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway through.

6. Serve

  • Open carefully (steam will escape).
  • Serve directly from the foil for minimal cleanup, or plate with fresh parsley.

Tips

✔ Slice potatoes thin for faster cooking.
✔ Add carrots, bell peppers, or mushrooms for extra flavor.
✔ For extra tenderness, marinate the steak briefly in olive oil, garlic, and soy sauce before layering.
