How to Use Baking Soda to Remove Dark Spots, Wrinkles, and Dark Circles from Your Face

Posted on April 16, 2026 by Admin

Short answer: don’t rely on baking soda for this. It’s a common DIY trend, but it can actually make skin problems worse.

Here’s what you need to know about using baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) on the face—and what actually works better.

Why baking soda is risky for your skin

Your skin has a slightly acidic protective barrier (the “acid mantle”). Baking soda is strongly alkaline, so it can:

  • Disrupt your skin barrier
  • Cause dryness and irritation
  • Worsen dark spots over time (post-inflammatory pigmentation)
  • Trigger redness, sensitivity, or breakouts

So while it may feel “squeaky clean,” that’s actually a sign of barrier damage.

About the claims (what’s true vs not)

❌ Dark spots

Baking soda does not safely fade pigmentation. It may temporarily exfoliate, but irritation can make spots darker.

❌ Wrinkles

It does not reduce wrinkles. Wrinkles are related to collagen loss, sun damage, and aging—not surface scrubbing.

❌ Dark circles

It does not treat under-eye circles, which are usually caused by:

  • Genetics
  • Thin skin showing blood vessels
  • Sleep issues
  • Pigmentation or allergies

If someone still wants a “natural” exfoliant (safer alternatives)

Instead of baking soda, dermatologists prefer gentler options:

  • Lactic acid (mild exfoliation + hydration)
  • Glycolic acid (fades dark spots gradually)
  • Niacinamide (improves pigmentation and skin barrier)
  • Vitamin C (brightening and antioxidant support)

These are used in real skincare because they’re controlled and tested.

Simple safe routine for dark spots & dull skin

If your goal is clearer skin, this works better:

Morning:

  • Gentle cleanser
  • Vitamin C serum
  • Sunscreen (very important)

Night:

  • Gentle cleanser
  • Niacinamide or retinoid (if suitable)
  • Moisturizer

For dark circles specifically

Try:

  • Better sleep consistency
  • Cold compress (temporary improvement)
  • Eye creams with caffeine or retinol (mild improvement)
  • Treating allergies if present

Bottom line

Baking soda is not a safe or effective treatment for dark spots, wrinkles, or dark circles. It can damage the skin barrier and make pigmentation worse.
