Posted on January 14, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a cozy, from-scratch Homemade Wonton Soup with a Flavorful Twist—classic comfort with deeper umami, ginger-garlic warmth, and a touch of sesame chili heat 🍜

Homemade Wonton Soup (Flavorful Twist)

Ingredients (4–6 servings)

Wontons

  • 30–35 wonton wrappers
  • ½ lb ground pork (or chicken or shrimp)
  • 1 green onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • ½ tsp cornstarch
  • Pinch white pepper

Broth (Flavorful Twist)

  • 6 cups chicken broth (low sodium)
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cloves garlic, smashed
  • 1–2 inch piece fresh ginger, sliced
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp Shaoxing wine (or dry sherry)
  • 1 tsp sugar or honey
  • 1–2 tsp sesame oil
  • Optional twist:
    • ½–1 tsp chili crisp or chili oil
    • 1 star anise (remove before serving)

Add-Ins

  • Baby bok choy or napa cabbage
  • Mushrooms (shiitake or cremini)
  • Extra green onions

Instructions

1. Make the wontons

  1. Mix pork, green onion, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, cornstarch, and white pepper.
  2. Place 1 tsp filling in center of each wrapper.
  3. Moisten edges, fold, and seal. Cover with a damp towel while working.

2. Build the broth

  1. In a pot, combine broth, water, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, sugar, and star anise (if using).
  2. Simmer gently 15–20 minutes for deep flavor. Remove aromatics.

3. Cook wontons

  1. Bring broth to a gentle boil.
  2. Add wontons and cook 3–4 minutes, until they float and filling is cooked.
  3. Add vegetables and cook 1–2 minutes until tender.

4. Finish

  • Stir in sesame oil and chili oil/crisp to taste.

Serve

  • Garnish with green onions
  • Optional drizzle of chili oil
  • Serve with soy sauce or black vinegar on the side

Flavor Twist Ideas

  • Miso wonton soup: Stir 1 tbsp white miso into broth
  • Lemongrass ginger: Add smashed lemongrass stalk
  • Spicy garlic: Add grated garlic at the end for bite

Make-Ahead Tips

  • Freeze uncooked wontons up to 2 months
  • Cook straight from frozen (add 1 extra minute)

If you want, I can also give you a vegetarian mushroom wonton version, a Thai-inspired broth twist, or a weeknight shortcut using store-bought wontons.
