🍞 Homemade Sandwich Bread

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour)
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup warm milk (around 40°C / 105°F)
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 egg (optional, for richness and brushing)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the yeast
    • Mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Make the dough
    • In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
    • Add yeast mixture and butter. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead
    • Knead by hand for 8–10 minutes or with a stand mixer for 5–6 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First rise
    • Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–1.5 hours, until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the loaf
    • Punch down dough, shape into a loaf, and place in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  6. Second rise
    • Cover and let rise for 30–45 minutes, until it puffs up.
  7. Bake
    • Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
    • Brush top with beaten egg or milk for a golden crust.
    • Bake 30–35 minutes, until golden brown.
  8. Cool
    • Remove from pan and let cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.

Tips for Soft Bread:

  • Use bread flour for a chewier texture.
  • Don’t skip kneading; it develops gluten for a better structure.
  • Brushing with butter after baking makes the crust soft and rich.
