Homemade Hard Candy

Here’s a simple guide to making homemade hard candy—sweet, crunchy, and fun to make at home!


🍬 Ingredients

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2–1 tsp flavoring (vanilla, peppermint, lemon, or fruit extracts)
  • Optional: food coloring
  • Powdered sugar or cornstarch (for dusting molds or work surface)

🔥 Instructions

1. Prepare Your Workspace

  • Lightly grease a baking sheet or dust with powdered sugar/cornstarch
  • Have candy molds or parchment paper ready

2. Combine Sugar, Corn Syrup, and Water

  • In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water
  • Stir until sugar dissolves completely

3. Boil the Mixture

  • Heat on medium-high without stirring once it starts boiling
  • Use a candy thermometer
  • Heat until 300°F (150°C) – hard crack stage

4. Add Color and Flavor

  • Remove from heat
  • Quickly stir in flavoring and optional food coloring
  • Work fast before the mixture starts to harden

5. Pour Into Molds or Shape

  • Pour candy into prepared molds or onto a parchment-lined sheet
  • For freeform candy, use a greased spatula to spread or shape quickly

6. Let Cool and Set

  • Allow to cool completely (about 20–30 minutes)
  • Break into pieces if using a sheet

7. Store Properly

  • Store in an airtight container to prevent moisture from making candy sticky

  • Don’t stir while boiling—it can cause sugar crystals
  • Use a candy thermometer for precise results
  • Work quickly after adding flavor/color—sugar sets fast
  • Experiment with different flavor combinations (mint + chocolate drizzle, fruit flavors, etc.)
