Here’s a healthy chocolate cake that’s moist, rich, and made with better-for-you ingredients—no refined sugar or butter, and easy to make 🍫

Healthy Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

Dry

  • 1½ cups whole wheat pastry flour (or oat flour)
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt

Wet

  • ½ cup maple syrup or honey
  • ⅓ cup coconut oil, melted (or avocado oil)
  • ¾ cup unsweetened almond milk (or any milk)
  • 2 eggs (or flax eggs for vegan)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt or unsweetened applesauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8-inch round pan or line with parchment.
  2. Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  3. Whisk wet ingredients in another bowl until smooth.
  4. Combine wet and dry ingredients until just mixed.
  5. Bake for 28–32 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out mostly clean.
  6. Cool completely before frosting.

Healthy Chocolate Frosting (Optional)

  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • 3–4 tbsp maple syrup or honey
  • ½ tsp vanilla

Mix until smooth and spread over cooled cake.


Substitutions & Notes

  • Gluten-free: Use oat flour or a 1:1 gluten-free blend
  • Vegan: Use flax eggs + maple syrup
  • Lower carb: Use almond flour + sugar-free maple syrup (texture will be denser)
  • Extra protein: Replace ¼ cup flour with chocolate protein powder
