Grandma’s Apple Pie

Posted on March 2, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic, comforting Grandma’s Apple Pie recipe—flaky crust, tender cinnamon apples, and that nostalgic homemade flavor.

🍎 Grandma’s Apple Pie

Ingredients

For the crust (makes 2 crusts)

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 6–8 tbsp ice water

For the filling

  • 6–7 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (for thickening)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp butter, cut into small pieces

Optional

  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp coarse sugar for topping

Instructions

  1. Prepare the crust:
    • In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
    • Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
    • Gradually add ice water, 1 tbsp at a time, until dough holds together.
    • Divide dough into 2 discs, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate at least 1 hour.
  2. Prepare the filling:
    • In a large bowl, toss apple slices with lemon juice.
    • Add sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, and vanilla. Mix until coated.
  3. Assemble the pie:
    • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
    • Roll out one dough disc on a floured surface and fit into a 9-inch pie pan.
    • Pour the apple mixture into the crust. Dot with butter.
    • Roll out the second dough disc and cover the pie. Seal and crimp edges.
    • Cut small slits in the top crust for steam to escape.
    • Brush with egg wash and sprinkle sugar, if desired.
  4. Bake the pie:
    • Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 20 minutes.
    • Reduce temperature to 375°F (190°C) and bake 35–45 minutes more, until crust is golden and filling is bubbling.
  5. Cool and serve:
    • Let the pie cool at least 2 hours for the filling to set.
    • Serve plain or with vanilla ice cream for extra nostalgia.

💡 Tips:

  • For extra flakiness, use a mix of butter and shortening.
  • If you like a slightly tart flavor, combine Granny Smith and Honeycrisp apples.
  • Cover edges with foil if they brown too quickly.

If you want, I can also give a shortcut version using a premade crust and a quick-caramelized filling—still tastes homemade but saves time.

Do you want me to share that version too?
