Here’s a classic, crispy, juicy fried chicken recipe that never lets you down.


Classic Southern Fried Chicken 🍗

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 1 whole chicken, cut into pieces (or 8–10 pieces)
  • Salt & black pepper

Buttermilk Marinade

  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder

Breading

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp cayenne (optional)

For Frying

  • Vegetable or peanut oil

Instructions

  1. Marinate
    Season chicken lightly with salt and pepper.
    Mix buttermilk with spices, add chicken, cover, and refrigerate 4–24 hours.
  2. Heat oil
    Heat oil in a deep skillet or Dutch oven to 325–350°F.
  3. Dredge
    Remove chicken from buttermilk (let excess drip off).
    Dredge in seasoned flour, pressing to coat well.
  4. Rest (important!)
    Let breaded chicken sit 10 minutes before frying—helps crust stick.
  5. Fry
    Fry in batches, about 12–15 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden and internal temp reaches 165°F.
  6. Drain & rest
    Transfer to wire rack or paper towels. Rest 5 minutes before serving.
