French Onion Meatloaf

Here’s a French Onion Meatloaf recipe that’s cozy, flavorful, and easy to make 🍽️
It has the rich taste of caramelized onions and melty cheese—like French onion soup, but as meatloaf.


🧅 French Onion Meatloaf

Ingredients

For the onions

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional, helps caramelize)
  • ½ tsp salt

For the meatloaf

  • 1½ lb (680 g) ground beef (or half beef, half pork)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs or crushed crackers
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 packet French onion soup mix
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (Gruyère, Swiss, or mozzarella work well)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Optional topping

  • Extra shredded cheese
  • A few more caramelized onions

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions
    • Cook onions in butter/oil over medium-low heat for 20–25 minutes, stirring often.
    • Add salt and sugar. Cook until deep golden and soft. Let cool slightly.
  2. Preheat oven
    • 350°F (175°C)
  3. Mix the meatloaf
    • In a large bowl, combine ground meat, breadcrumbs, eggs, milk, soup mix, cheese, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, and most of the onions.
    • Mix gently—don’t overwork it.
  4. Shape & bake
    • Place mixture in a greased loaf pan or shape into a loaf on a lined baking sheet.
    • Top with remaining onions (and extra cheese if you like).
    • Bake for 50–60 minutes, until cooked through.
  5. Rest & serve
    • Let rest 5–10 minutes before slicing.

🍽️ Serving Ideas

  • Mashed potatoes
  • Green beans or roasted carrots
  • A side salad

💡 Tips

  • Want it extra “French onion”? Add a splash of beef broth to the meat mixture.
  • Swap breadcrumbs for oats if needed.
  • Leftovers make great sandwiches the next day.
