Here’s a comforting, old-fashioned Creamed Peas and Potatoes recipe—simple, cozy, and perfect as a side dish 🥔🌱

Creamed Peas and Potatoes

Ingredients

  • 1½ lb potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 2 cups peas (fresh or frozen)
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk (whole milk preferred)
  • Salt & black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: pinch of sugar, chopped parsley

Instructions

  1. Cook potatoes
    Place potatoes in salted water.
    Boil 10–12 minutes until just tender.
    Add peas during the last 2–3 minutes.
    Drain and set aside.
  2. Make cream sauce
    In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
    Whisk in flour and cook 1 minute (do not brown).
    Slowly whisk in milk until smooth.
  3. Thicken
    Simmer, stirring, until thickened (3–5 minutes).
    Season with salt, pepper, and a tiny pinch of sugar if desired.
  4. Combine
    Gently fold potatoes and peas into the sauce.
    Heat through 2–3 minutes.
  5. Serve warm
    Garnish with parsley if using.

Tips & Variations

  • Extra creamy: Replace ½ cup milk with cream or half-and-half
  • Southern style: Add a pinch of nutmeg
  • Cheesy: Stir in ½ cup grated cheddar
  • Ham upgrade: Add diced cooked ham or bacon
