Classic Chili Dog Sauce

Heck yes 🌭 — classic chili dog sauce, the smooth, spoonable kind that hugs the hot dog.

Classic Chili Dog Sauce (no beans)

You’ll need

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, very finely minced (or grated)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1½ cups water or beef broth
  • 6 oz tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt (to taste)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • Optional but traditional:
    • 1 tsp yellow mustard
    • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
    • Pinch of cayenne

How

  1. Brown beef in a saucepan, breaking it up very fine (almost paste-like).
    👉 For true diner texture, add a little water and mash as it cooks.
  2. Add onion and garlic; cook until very soft.
  3. Stir in tomato sauce, tomato paste, spices, mustard, and Worcestershire.
  4. Add water/broth, bring to a gentle simmer.
  5. Simmer 30–45 minutes, stirring often, until thick but pourable.
  6. Taste and adjust salt, sugar, and heat.

Chili-dog authenticity tips 🏁

  • Finely crumbled meat is key — no chunky chili here.
  • Slight sweetness balances the spice (that’s the secret).
  • It should be loose, not stew-thick — it tightens as it cools.

  • Shredded cheddar or American cheese
