Posted on November 29, 2025 by Admin

Here’s a classic, Southern-style Chicken-Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes & Country Gravy recipe — crispy, peppery breaded steak with creamy mashed potatoes and a rich, white gravy. Comfort food perfection. 🤤

🥩🍗 Chicken-Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes & Gravy

⭐ Ingredients (4 servings)

For the Steaks

  • 4 cube steaks (or tenderized round steaks, about ½–¾ inch thick)
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp cayenne (optional)
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk or buttermilk
  • Oil for frying (vegetable, canola, or peanut)

Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 lbs potatoes (Russet or Yukon gold), peeled & cubed
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½–1 cup milk or heavy cream
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • Optional: ½ cup sour cream for richness

Country Gravy

  • 3 tbsp steak drippings or butter
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 2–2 ½ cups milk
  • Salt & plenty of black pepper (to taste)

🥣 Instructions

1. Make the Mashed Potatoes

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender (12–15 min).
  2. Drain, mash with butter, milk/cream, salt & pepper.
  3. Add sour cream if you want ultra-creamy potatoes.
  4. Keep warm.

2. Prepare the Steak Coating

In a shallow dish:
Mix flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and cayenne.

In a second bowl:
Whisk eggs + milk (or buttermilk).

3. Dredge the Steaks

For each steak:

  1. Coat in flour mixture.
  2. Dip into egg mixture.
  3. Back into the flour mixture — press the flour on well.

Let rest 5 minutes to help the coating stick.

4. Fry the Steaks

  1. Heat ¼–½ inch oil in a skillet to 350°F.
  2. Add steaks and fry 3–4 minutes per side, until golden and crispy.
  3. Place on a wire rack or paper towels to drain.

5. Make the Country Gravy

  1. Drain most of the oil, leaving 3 tbsp drippings in the skillet.
  2. Whisk in 3 tbsp flour and cook 1 minute.
  3. Slowly whisk in milk until smooth and thickened.
  4. Season generously with salt + black pepper (gravy should be peppery).

If too thick → add a splash more milk.
Too thin → simmer longer.

6. Serve

Place mashed potatoes on the plate, top with chicken-fried steak, and spoon warm pepper gravy over everything.
Sprinkle with parsley if you want it fancy.

⭐ Variations

  • Buttermilk chicken-fried steak: Use all buttermilk in the egg dip for extra tender meat.
  • Spicy version: Add ½–1 tsp cayenne to the flour.
  • Oven option: Bake fried steaks at 350°F for 10 minutes to keep warm and crisp.
  • Creamier gravy: Add 2 tbsp cream cheese or ¼ cup heavy cream near the end.
