Here’s a baked sweet and sour chicken that’s crispy, tangy, and healthier than the fried version 🍗🍍
Baked Sweet and Sour Chicken
Ingredients
Chicken
- 500 g (1 lb) boneless chicken breast or thighs, cut into chunks
- Salt & pepper, to taste
- 1 cup cornstarch
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- ¼ cup oil (for baking tray)
Sweet & Sour Sauce
- ¾ cup sugar
- ½ cup ketchup
- ⅓ cup apple cider vinegar (or white vinegar)
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
Optional add-ins
- Bell peppers, pineapple chunks, onion
Instructions
- Preheat oven
- Heat oven to 200°C / 400°F.
- Pour oil into a baking dish and place in oven to heat.
- Coat the chicken
- Season chicken with salt and pepper.
- Dip chicken into cornstarch, then into beaten eggs.
- Bake (first round)
- Carefully place chicken in hot baking dish.
- Bake 15 minutes, flip pieces, then bake another 15 minutes.
- Make sauce
- Whisk together sugar, ketchup, vinegar, soy sauce, and garlic powder.
- Bake with sauce
- Remove chicken, pour sauce evenly over it.
- Add peppers/pineapple if using.
- Bake 15–20 minutes, turning once, until sauce is thick and sticky.
Tips
- For extra crispiness, use chicken thighs.
- Serve with steamed rice or fried rice.
- Balance sweetness by adding 1–2 tbsp pineapple juice or reducing sugar slightly.
