Old-school spaghetti

Ahhh, old-school spaghetti—the kind that smells like Sunday and fixes everything 🍝❤️ Simple, saucy, no fancy nonsense.

Old-School Spaghetti

Ingredients

  • 1 lb spaghetti
  • 1 lb ground beef (or half beef / half Italian sausage)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (24 oz) jar tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional, but very old-school)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • Optional but classic: a dash of Worcestershire or bay leaf

Instructions

  1. Boil pasta
    Cook spaghetti in well-salted water until al dente. Drain.
  2. Brown the meat
    In a big skillet or pot, brown ground beef with onion. Drain excess grease.
  3. Add garlic & sauce
    Stir in garlic (30 seconds), then tomato sauce, tomato paste, sugar, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning.
  4. Simmer low & slow
    Let it bubble gently 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Longer = better.
  5. Combine or serve
    Toss spaghetti with sauce or ladle sauce over noodles (true diner style).

Serve It Right

  • 🧀 Kraft shaker Parmesan (mandatory nostalgia)
  • 🍞 Buttered bread or garlic toast
  • 🥗 Iceberg lettuce salad with bottled Italian dressing

Old-School Tweaks

  • 🧈 A small pat of butter in the sauce at the end = silky magic
  • 🌶️ Red pepper flakes if you like a little heat
  • 🍅 A splash of pasta water to loosen sauce

If you want the “mom made it in a big pot” version, a no-jar from-scratch, or the cafeteria-style one… say the word 😄
