BAKED SWEET AND SOUR CHICKEN

Here’s a baked sweet and sour chicken that’s crispy, tangy, and healthier than the fried version 🍗🍍


Baked Sweet and Sour Chicken

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 500 g (1 lb) boneless chicken breast or thighs, cut into chunks
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • ¼ cup oil (for baking tray)

Sweet & Sour Sauce

  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ⅓ cup apple cider vinegar (or white vinegar)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

Optional add-ins

  • Bell peppers, pineapple chunks, onion

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven
    • Heat oven to 200°C / 400°F.
    • Pour oil into a baking dish and place in oven to heat.
  2. Coat the chicken
    • Season chicken with salt and pepper.
    • Dip chicken into cornstarch, then into beaten eggs.
  3. Bake (first round)
    • Carefully place chicken in hot baking dish.
    • Bake 15 minutes, flip pieces, then bake another 15 minutes.
  4. Make sauce
    • Whisk together sugar, ketchup, vinegar, soy sauce, and garlic powder.
  5. Bake with sauce
    • Remove chicken, pour sauce evenly over it.
    • Add peppers/pineapple if using.
    • Bake 15–20 minutes, turning once, until sauce is thick and sticky.

Tips

  • For extra crispiness, use chicken thighs.
  • Serve with steamed rice or fried rice.
  • Balance sweetness by adding 1–2 tbsp pineapple juice or reducing sugar slightly.
