A mini stroke is called a Transient ischemic attack (TIA). Symptoms are temporary — often lasting minutes to an hour — but they are serious warning signs of a possible major stroke, especially within the next 48 hours.
Here are 5 symptoms in seniors that should never be ignored:
1️⃣ Sudden Weakness or Numbness (Especially One Side)
- Face drooping
- Arm or leg weakness
- Difficulty gripping or lifting
Even brief one-sided symptoms are a red flag.
2️⃣ Sudden Speech or Language Trouble
- Slurred speech
- Trouble forming words
- Confusion or difficulty understanding others
If speech suddenly changes, call for help immediately.
3️⃣ Sudden Vision Changes
- Blurred or double vision
- Temporary loss of vision in one eye
- “Curtain” coming down over vision
Vision symptoms can be brief but are urgent.
4️⃣ Sudden Dizziness or Loss of Balance
- Unsteady walking
- Coordination problems
- Unexplained falls
In older adults, this can sometimes be mistaken for “just aging,” but sudden onset is concerning.
5️⃣ Sudden Severe Headache
- Intense and unusual
- Especially if paired with other neurological symptoms
🚨 Remember FAST
- Face drooping
- Arm weakness
- Speech difficulty
- Time to call emergency services
Do not wait for symptoms to pass. Even if they disappear, seek medical care immediately.
Why It’s Critical
About 1 in 3 people who experience a TIA will go on to have a stroke — often within days.
If this question is about someone right now and symptoms are happening, call emergency services immediately.
If you’d like, tell me:
- The person’s age
- What happened
- How long symptoms lasted
I can help assess urgency.
