Here’s a classic patty melt recipe 🥩🧅🧀—crispy, cheesy, and super satisfying.
Ingredients (makes 2 sandwiches)
- 1/2 lb ground beef (or more for extra patties)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 4 slices rye bread (or your favorite sturdy bread)
- 4 slices Swiss cheese (or American cheese)
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 2–3 tablespoons butter
Instructions
- Cook the onions
- Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet over medium heat.
- Add onions and cook 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and caramelized. Remove and set aside.
- Form and cook patties
- Divide ground beef into 2–4 thin patties.
- Season with salt and pepper.
- In the same skillet, cook patties over medium heat 3–4 minutes per side, or until cooked through.
- Assemble the patty melt
- Butter one side of each bread slice.
- Place a slice of cheese on the unbuttered side, add a patty, some caramelized onions, then another slice of cheese. Top with the other slice of bread (buttered side out).
- Grill the sandwich
- Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
- Grill sandwiches 3–4 minutes per side, pressing lightly, until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted.
- Serve
- Cut in half and enjoy warm!
Tips & Variations
- 🧅 For extra flavor, cook onions with a splash of Worcestershire sauce.
- 🥓 Add cooked bacon for a smoky twist.
- 🧀 Try cheddar, provolone, or a combo of cheeses for variety.
- 🍞 Press the sandwich with a spatula while grilling for that classic “diner-style” crispiness.
I can also give a shortcut version with pre-cooked onions that’s ready in under 15 minutes if you want. Do you want me to do that?
