Cornbread Dressing

Posted on November 22, 2025 by Admin

Here’s a classic Southern Cornbread Dressing recipe—moist, savory, and perfect for holidays or any comfort-food meal.

⭐ Southern Cornbread Dressing

Ingredients

For the Cornbread

(You can also use leftover or store-bought cornbread—about 8 cups crumbled.)

  • 1 cup cornmeal

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 Tbsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp baking soda

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 eggs

  • 1⅓ cups buttermilk

  • ¼ cup melted butter or oil

For the Dressing

  • 8 cups crumbled cornbread

  • 3–4 cups chicken broth (add more if needed)

  • 1 medium onion, finely diced

  • 3 ribs celery, finely diced

  • 4 Tbsp butter

  • 2 eggs, beaten

  • 1 tsp poultry seasoning

  • 1 tsp dried sage (or to taste—Southern classics usually use more!)

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • ½–1 tsp salt (taste before adding; broth can be salty)

  • Optional: 1 cup crumbled biscuits or white bread for extra texture

  • Optional: ½ cup chopped parsley

  • Optional: cooked shredded chicken or turkey mixed in

Instructions

1. Make the Cornbread (if baking fresh)

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).

  2. Combine all dry ingredients.

  3. Stir in eggs, buttermilk, and melted butter.

  4. Pour into a greased cast-iron skillet or 9×9 pan.

  5. Bake 20–25 minutes, until golden.

  6. Cool, then crumble into a large bowl.

2. Make the Dressing

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a skillet, sauté onion and celery in butter until soft (about 8–10 minutes).

  3. Add sautéed vegetables to the crumbled cornbread.

  4. Add poultry seasoning, sage, salt, and pepper.

  5. Stir in beaten eggs.

  6. Pour in chicken broth gradually until the mixture is very moist—almost pourable but not soupy.

  7. Taste and adjust seasoning.

  8. Pour into a greased 9×13 baking dish.

  9. Bake 40–50 minutes, until lightly browned and set in the center.

Tips for Perfect Dressing

  • Texture is key: dressing should be moist, not dry. Add more broth if needed.

  • Add biscuits for a more traditional old-school flavor.

  • If you love sage, bump it up to 1½–2 tsp.

  • Make ahead: assemble the day before, refrigerate, and bake the next day.

  • Add turkey drippings for deeper holiday flavor.
