That’s not quite right—bananas actually do spoil pretty quickly compared to many other fruits.
At room temperature, bananas typically:
- Stay fresh for about 2–5 days after they ripen (yellow stage)
- Start developing brown spots within a couple of days
- Can become overripe (very soft, mushy, strong smell) soon after
A few things affect how fast they spoil:
- Temperature: Warm environments speed up ripening and spoilage
- Storage: Keeping them in a bunch makes them ripen faster
- Ethylene gas: Bananas release a lot of it, which accelerates ripening (especially if stored with other fruits)
If you want them to last longer:
- Separate them from the bunch
- Wrap the stems in plastic
- Refrigerate them once they’re ripe (the peel turns dark, but the inside stays good longer)
So while they don’t instantly spoil, it’s normal for bananas to go bad within a few days—especially in warm conditions.
