If someone says:
“If you have lines on your nails, it means you have cancer.”
That is not true.
Nail lines are very common and are usually harmless. The meaning depends on what kind of lines they are.
Common Types of Nail Lines
1️⃣ Vertical Ridges (most common)
- Run from cuticle to tip
- Very normal, especially with aging
- Similar to wrinkles in the skin
- Not a sign of cancer
2️⃣ Horizontal Lines (Beau’s lines)
- Indentations across the nail
- Often caused by:
- Illness with high fever
- Severe stress
- Nutritional deficiency
- Injury to the nail
They reflect a temporary interruption in nail growth — not automatically cancer.
3️⃣ Dark Vertical Streaks
This is the only situation where evaluation matters more.
A dark brown or black stripe (especially on one nail) can sometimes be related to a rare skin cancer called:
- Subungual melanoma
But most dark streaks are harmless, especially in people with darker skin tones.
🚨 You should see a doctor if:
- The streak is new and widening
- The color is uneven
- Pigment spreads to surrounding skin
- The nail is changing shape
- There is bleeding without injury
Important Perspective
Most nail changes are caused by:
- Aging
- Minor trauma
- Vitamin deficiencies
- Stress
- Thyroid issues
- Fungal infections
Cancer is rare, especially without other symptoms.
If you’d like, describe what the lines look like (color, direction, one nail or many), and I can help you understand what’s most likely.
