Navajo Tacos with Green Chile are built on fluffy fry bread and loaded with savory meat, beans, chile, and toppings.


🌮 Navajo Tacos with Green Chile

🛒 Ingredients

For the Fry Bread

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • ¾–1 cup warm water
  • Oil for frying

For the Green Chile Beef

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup roasted green chile (fresh or frozen, chopped)
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup tomato sauce (optional, for saucier texture)

Toppings

  • Refried beans
  • Shredded lettuce
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Shredded cheddar or Colby Jack
  • Sour cream
  • Sliced jalapeños

🔪 Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Fry Bread

  1. Mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Stir in oil and warm water until dough forms.
  3. Knead lightly (about 2–3 minutes).
  4. Cover and rest 10–15 minutes.
  5. Divide into 4–6 balls.
  6. Flatten into 6–8 inch rounds.
  7. Fry in 350°F oil for about 1–2 minutes per side until golden and puffed.
  8. Drain on paper towels.

2️⃣ Cook the Green Chile Beef

  1. Brown ground beef with onion.
  2. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds.
  3. Stir in green chile, cumin, chili powder, salt.
  4. Add tomato sauce if using.
  5. Simmer 5–10 minutes.

3️⃣ Assemble

  1. Spread warm refried beans on fry bread.
  2. Spoon green chile beef over top.
  3. Add lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, sour cream, and jalapeños.

Serve immediately while fry bread is warm and crisp.


🔥 Tips

  • Use Hatch green chiles if you can — they add amazing flavor.
  • Don’t overwork the fry bread dough or it gets tough.
