Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is hearty, simple, and built around pantry staples — creamy, beefy, and perfect for feeding a family.


Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

🛒 Ingredients

  • 1½ pounds ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups sliced potatoes (about 3–4 medium, thinly sliced)
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese

For the sauce:

  • 1 (10.5-oz) can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Optional: ½ tsp dried thyme

🔪 Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Hamburger Steaks

In a large bowl, combine:

  • Ground beef
  • Onion
  • Salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika
  • Breadcrumbs
  • Egg

Mix gently and form into 4–6 oval patties.


2️⃣ Brown the Patties

Heat a skillet over medium heat.
Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side (they don’t need to be fully cooked).
Set aside.


3️⃣ Prepare the Sauce

Whisk together:

  • Cream of mushroom soup
  • Milk
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Thyme (if using)

4️⃣ Assemble the Bake

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

  1. Lightly grease a 9×13 baking dish.
  2. Layer sliced potatoes on the bottom.
  3. Place browned hamburger steaks on top.
  4. Pour sauce evenly over everything.
  5. Cover tightly with foil.

5️⃣ Bake

Bake covered for 60 minutes.
Remove foil, sprinkle cheddar on top, and bake another 15–20 minutes until bubbly and potatoes are fork-tender.

Let rest 10 minutes before serving.


🧡 Optional Add-Ins

  • Sliced mushrooms
  • Green beans layered with potatoes
  • Swap cheddar for Colby or Swiss
  • Add a dash of hot sauce for depth
