Here’s a classic Gooey Butter Cake — a rich, buttery, soft cake with a sweet, creamy topping that’s slightly gooey in the center 🍰✨


🍰 Classic Gooey Butter Cake

🧂 Ingredients

Bottom Cake Layer

  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg

Gooey Topping

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 cups powdered sugar

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Prep

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.

2️⃣ Make the Cake Layer

  • Mix cake mix, melted butter, and 1 egg until combined.
  • Press evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.

3️⃣ Make the Gooey Topping

  • Beat cream cheese until smooth.
  • Add eggs and vanilla; mix well.
  • Gradually beat in powdered sugar until creamy.
  • Pour over the cake layer and spread evenly.

4️⃣ Bake

  • Bake for 35–40 minutes, until the edges are set but the center is slightly soft.
  • Don’t overbake — a little jiggle in the center is perfect for gooeyness.

5️⃣ Cool & Serve

  • Cool completely before cutting.
  • Dust with extra powdered sugar if desired.

  • Use freshly shredded cream cheese for smooth topping.
  • Let it cool completely for cleaner slices.
  • Add lemon zest or a little almond extract to the topping for extra flavor.
