Amish hamburger steak bake

Posted on November 28, 2025 by Admin

Here’s a hearty, comforting Amish Hamburger Steak Bake — simple ingredients, down-home flavor, and an easy oven method. This is like a cross between Salisbury steak and a creamy Amish casserole. Perfect served with mashed potatoes, noodles, or over rice.

🍽 Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

Ingredients

For the hamburger steaks

  • 2 lbs ground beef

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 1 egg

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs or crushed saltines

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

For the creamy gravy

  • 2 cans (10.5 oz each) cream of mushroom soup

  • 1 cup milk or half-and-half

  • ½ packet dry onion soup mix or 1 Tbsp beef bouillon

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • Optional: ½ cup sliced mushrooms or sautéed onions

🥘 Instructions

1. Mix the meat

In a large bowl combine:

  • ground beef

  • chopped onion

  • egg

  • breadcrumbs

  • salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder

  • Worcestershire

Mix gently until combined.

2. Shape patties

Form into 6–8 thick oval patties (like hamburger steaks).

Place them into a greased 9×13 baking dish in a single layer.

3. Make the gravy

In a separate bowl, whisk together:

  • cream of mushroom soup

  • milk/half-and-half

  • onion soup mix OR bouillon

  • pepper

Pour evenly over the patties.

(Add mushrooms/onions if using.)

4. Bake

Cover with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes.
Remove foil and bake another 15–20 minutes until bubbling, browned, and cooked through.

5. Serve

Serve the patties with plenty of gravy spooned over top.
Great with:

  • mashed potatoes

  • buttered egg noodles

  • Amish-style buttered corn

  • green beans

⭐ Tips & Variations

  • Stretch the meal: Add sliced potatoes around the edges of the dish so they cook in the gravy.

  • Richer gravy: Add ¼ cup sour cream to the soup mixture.

  • Beefier version: Sear patties in a skillet first for deeper flavor.

  • Mushroom lovers: Use cream of mushroom + cream of onion soup combo.

If you want, I can also give you a slow cooker version, a smothered onion version, or an old-fashioned Amish skillet version!
