French Toast recipe

Here’s a classic, easy French Toast recipe—golden on the outside, soft on the inside 🍞

Classic French Toast

Ingredients (serves 2–3)

  • 4–6 slices bread (thick-cut works best: brioche, challah, or Texas toast)
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk (or half-and-half for richer toast)
  • 1 tbsp sugar (optional)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • Butter or oil, for cooking

Instructions

  1. Make the custard
    In a shallow bowl, whisk eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
  2. Dip the bread
    Dip each slice into the mixture, letting it soak about 10–15 seconds per side (don’t oversoak).
  3. Cook
    Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add butter.
    Cook bread 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  4. Serve warm
    Top with syrup, powdered sugar, fruit, or whipped cream.

Tips for best French toast

  • Slightly stale bread works best—it absorbs without falling apart
  • Keep heat medium so it cooks through without burning
  • Add a splash of cream for extra richness

Variations

  • Cinnamon roll style: Add nutmeg and extra cinnamon
  • Stuffed: Fill with cream cheese and berries
  • Savory: Skip sugar/vanilla; add salt, pepper, and herbs
