Forgotten dessert

Posted on January 11, 2026 by Admin

“Forgotten Dessert” is often a nostalgic, old-fashioned treat—usually a simple, make-ahead dessert that’s slightly hidden in flavor or ingredients, like a creamy layered pudding, a baked custard, or a trifle-style dish. Here’s a classic version you can recreate:

Forgotten Dessert (Creamy Custard Trifle)

Serves: 6–8

Ingredients

  • 1 box yellow or sponge cake (or homemade, cut into cubes)
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional, walnuts or pecans)
  • 1 cup raisins or dried fruit (optional)
  • Whipped cream, for topping
  • Ground cinnamon or cocoa powder, for garnish

Instructions

1. Preheat Oven (if baking custard)

  • Preheat to 350°F (175°C).

2. Prepare Custard

  1. In a mixing bowl, beat eggs.
  2. Add sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.

3. Layer Dessert

  1. In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish (or trifle bowl), layer cake cubes.
  2. Sprinkle optional nuts and raisins.
  3. Pour custard mixture over the cake evenly.

4. Bake (or Chill)

  • Baked version: Bake 35–40 minutes until custard is set but slightly jiggly in the center. Cool before topping.
  • No-bake version: Simply layer cake, custard, nuts, and raisins in a trifle dish and chill for 4+ hours.

5. Finish

  • Top with whipped cream and sprinkle cinnamon or cocoa powder before serving.

Variations

  • Chocolate Forgotten Dessert: Add ½ cup cocoa powder to custard mixture
  • Tropical: Add canned pineapple chunks or shredded coconut
  • Coffee flavor: Add 1 tsp instant coffee granules to custard

💡 Tips

  • The “forgotten” part often refers to letting it chill overnight so flavors meld.
  • Great as a make-ahead dessert for holidays or potlucks.
  • Can be served warm (baked) or cold (refrigerated).

If you want, I can give you a classic “Old-Fashioned Forgotten Dessert” recipe from 1950s cookbooks that’s more nostalgic and retro.

Do you want me to do that?
