Here’s a classic Amish Hearth Casserole—a hearty, comforting baked dish that’s popular in Amish-style home cooking. It’s simple, filling, and great for family dinners.

Amish Hearth Casserole Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cups cooked egg noodles
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese (divided)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: 1 cup frozen peas or corn

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef with the chopped onion. Drain excess fat.
  3. In a large bowl, combine:
    • Cooked noodles
    • Cream of mushroom soup
    • Cream of chicken soup
    • Milk
    • 1 cup shredded cheese
    • Salt and pepper
    • Optional vegetables
  4. Stir in the cooked beef and onion.
  5. Transfer mixture to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  6. Sprinkle remaining ½ cup cheese on top.
  7. Bake uncovered for 30–35 minutes, until bubbly and lightly golden.
  8. Let rest 5 minutes before serving.

Tips & Variations

  • More traditional Amish style: Use homemade cream soup and egg noodles if you have them.
  • Richer version: Add ½ cup sour cream.
  • Crunchy topping: Sprinkle buttered breadcrumbs or crushed crackers on top before baking.
