A patty melt 🧀🥩 is a classic comfort sandwich—basically a cheeseburger meets grilled cheese.

What it is

  • Beef patty (usually thin and well-seasoned)
  • Caramelized onions
  • Cheese (Swiss is traditional, sometimes American or cheddar)
  • Rye bread
  • Grilled in butter until crispy and golden

Classic Patty Melt (Quick Recipe)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • Salt & black pepper
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • Butter

Instructions

  1. Caramelize onions
    Cook onions slowly in butter over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until deep golden (20–25 min). Set aside.
  2. Cook patties
    Form beef into thin oval patties. Season with salt and pepper.
    Cook in a hot skillet 2–3 min per side until browned.
  3. Assemble
    Butter one side of each bread slice.
    Layer: bread (butter-side down) → cheese → patty → onions → cheese → bread.
  4. Grill
    Cook sandwiches on medium-low until bread is golden and cheese is melted, flipping once.

Variations

  • Diner-style: Add a swipe of mustard or special sauce
  • Cheesy: Mix Swiss + American
  • Bold: Add sautéed mushrooms or use sourdough
