Southern Sweet Potato Pie

Ingredients

Crust (9-inch pie)

  • 1 9-inch pie crust (homemade or store-bought)

Filling

  • 2 cups mashed sweet potatoes (about 2–3 medium sweet potatoes, baked or boiled)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp ground ginger
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
    Place pie crust in a 9-inch pie pan.
  2. Prepare sweet potatoes
    • Bake or boil until tender.
    • Mash until smooth (no lumps).
  3. Make filling
    • In a large bowl, beat butter and sugars until creamy.
    • Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well.
    • Stir in milk, vanilla, and spices.
    • Fold in mashed sweet potatoes until smooth.
  4. Assemble & bake
    • Pour filling into prepared pie crust.
    • Smooth top with spatula.
    • Bake 50–60 minutes, until knife inserted near center comes out clean.
  5. Cool
    • Let cool completely (1–2 hours) to set.
    • Serve at room temperature or chilled.

Tips

  • Make-ahead: Pie can be baked a day ahead and refrigerated.
  • Extra flavor: Add 1–2 tsp orange zest or a splash of bourbon to filling.
  • Toppings: Whipped cream, pecans, or a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Variations

  • 🥥 Coconut Sweet Potato Pie: fold in ½ cup shredded coconut
  • 🍫 Chocolate swirl: drizzle melted chocolate on top before serving
  • 🌰 Pecan crust: use a pecan-crumb crust instead of traditional
